The flooring is one of the first things that a person will notice when entering your home or office. Hardwood flooring can be one of the most important aspects of a home as a lot more home buyers are looking for. Flooring isn't just something you walk on, there is more to it. The days of carpeted flooring in your home are over as hardwood is easier to clean and maintain than carpeting.

Solid hardwood floors are nailed or stapled down on top of a wooden subfloor. There is a wax paper that is put under the hardwood floors prior to installation. This is no way a vapor barrier, or meant to be used as a moisture barrier as it is punctured with nails or staples during installation. This wax paper is put down to facilitate the sliding of the pieces into place during installation.

Baseboards, shoe molding or quarter rounds are installed after the completion of the hardwood flooring installation to cover the gap that is left between the wall and the hardwood floors to allow for any expansion that occurs during the summer months with the increase in temperature and humidity.

Since solid hardwood floor installation requires the existence of a wooden subfloor, it is suitable to be installed in first and second floors of most homes. It is not suitable to installation in basements, or apartments and condos due to the concrete subfloors found in these areas.

Engineered Hardwood Floors are more flexible in terms of installation processes. They can be nailed down like solid hardwood floors, or glued down to a subfloor such as a cork or plywood subfloor. They are also produced with a click installation system, which allows them to be installed as a floating floor system on top of concrete hardwood floors. This makes Engineered hardwood floors the most versatile hardwood flooring product as it can be installed on any type of subfloor which maintaining the look and feel of genuine hardwood floors. These floors can also be site finished and refinished if necessary.

The nail down installation process for engineered hardwood flooring is the same as the solid hardwood flooring installation. The glue-down process involves first gluing or nailing down a sub-floor, and then gluing the engineered floors to the subfloor. In both the nail-down and the glue-down systems the flooring is attached to the subfloor.

The floating floor system is the easiest flooring installation process. The flooring products that can be installed in this manner are manufactured differently. Instead of having a tongue and groove construction which allows for a lip to be nailed down, they have unique clicking system that locks them together once installed without the need for glue or nails. These systems are not attached to the subfloor and are therefore called floating floors as they sit on top of the subfloor. These types of floors require an under-padding to be installed underneath them to provide a moisture barrier and for sound-proofing the floors. These floors are easier to replace if damage occurs in a small section.

Cork, laminate, lvp and lvt flooring are floating flooring systems that are installed using the “click” system. Made of a multi-layer synthetic flooring product fused together with a lamination process, laminate flooring simulates different types of wood (or sometimes stone) with a photographic applique layer under a clear finish. The inner core layer is usually composed of melamine resin and fiber board materials. Laminate flooring has grown significantly in popularity, perhaps because it may be easier to install and maintain than more traditional surfaces such as hardwood flooring. It may also have the advantages of costing less and requiring less skill to install than alternative flooring materials.

Because wood is a natural product it tends to be prone to wear over the years. Restoring or Refinishing can breathe new life and bring back the natural beauty of your floors. A restoration begins with the removal of the previous finish. Ask any do-it-yourselfer, and you will quickly find out that this can be a daunting and messy task. Our expert craftsmen have the necessary equipment to ensure that all of the previous finish is removed without damaging the wood, and prepare the floor to accept new stain. The removal of the previous finish is accomplished with the help of specialized power sanders that are specifically designed for flooring applications.

After the sanding is completed and the previous finish is completely removed, the floor can now be stained or left natural, this is followed by buffing and application of polyurethane. When it comes to stain, there is a variety of available shades for any taste and style. Although having a color chart may be helpful, oftentimes paper does not capture the shade accurately, which can lead to confusion. Because using the same shade of stain on different types of hardwood floors creates different results, the process of selecting a stain for your floors can be frustrating and lead to unnecessary costs. After staining the floor we start the finishing process by applying the finish.
We utilize the two most common types of hardwood floor polyurethane coatings. These are an Oil Modified polyurethane and a Waterborne polyurethane.

Both of these finishes are available in Gloss, Semi-gloss or Satin sheens.

Wood Floors are a lifetime investment, and decisions concerning them should not be taken lightly Routine maintenance should include protecting the surface finish from moisture and heavy wear which creates scratches. This maintenance requires more than sweeping and vacuuming.

Always clean your wood floors periodically with a professional wood floor cleaning product recommended by a wood flooring professional and/or the manufacturer of your particular hardwood floor product. Not doing so may void any warranty or guarantee on the product.

Tile and stone installation.

When it comes to flooring, nothing gives you more options and opportunities to express your unique vision than tile. Choose stone, ceramic or porcelain, and arrange it in nearly endless patterns.

We use the term tile loosely to include ceramic tile, porcelain tile, quarry tile, mosaic tile, travertine and marble. Even though all of these products come in “tiles”, they are all different. The most common application is ceramic tile. Ceramic tile is a man-made material made from non-metallic components through heat and subsequent cooling, basically flat pottery.

Porcelain is made in a similar process, but with raw materials that make it tougher and stronger than a basic ceramic. Quarry tile is made of clay and shales and is also a durable product that can be used in interior and exterior applications. Mosaic tiles can be made of any of the aforementioned materials to also include glass. They generally come in much smaller sizes and are fixed to a mesh backing.

Travertine and marble are both natural porous materials. Marble can be used used in areas that require a durable material, but travertine, which is often rated as one of the most beautiful materials, is not known for its durability due to the natural pores and crevices that provide that beauty.

These materials are available in a large variety of shapes and sizes. The average life span for tile ranges from 25 years for marble and travertine to 50 years with ceramic and porcelain. Recommended cleaning methods include a mix of warm water and vinegar. Grout lines and porous materials should be sealed periodically to prevent stains from setting into the material.
